Teenager who has threatened suicide remanded on bail

A teenager, who has been making suicide attempts and is facing a motor theft related charge, was remanded on bail with strict conditions today by the Dublin Children’s Court.

Judge Ann Ryan noted that the teenage boy (aged 17) had breached a court imposed curfew bail condition but also heard that this happened on a night in which the teenager had been upset and had left his home after he had engaged in self harm.

Judge Ryan remanded the south Dublin teenager on bail with strict conditions to appear again next week.

He was ordered to sign on daily at his local Garda station, to obey a curfew from 10pm to 7am and to be of good behaviour.

She sought a report from St James’ Hospital’s psychiatric ward which had treated the teenager last year and also asked for his psychologist to attend the case next week.

His step father told the court “he suffers from depression and has made attempts at his own life. If you see his arms, he has injured himself as a result of his depression."

He also added that the boy, whose mother is in ill health, had attempted to hang himself on other occasions.

He also told the court that the boy had spent a period on remand in St Patrick’s Institution earlier for breaching his bail conditions. He also claimed the teen had been assaulted there and did not receive psychological services.
