Robbie Keane has backed Ireland to beat Russia in Saturday’s crucial Euro 2004 qualifier – even though he is forced to miss the match through injury.
The Tottenham striker damaged ankle ligaments on while international duty playing against Australia a fortnight ago, and is expected to be out of action for another fortnight.
Ireland could do with the star striker at Lansdowne Road as a victory could see the team win Group 10 and qualify automatically for Portugal next summer.
“This is a crucial game for us but I’m sure the lads will do us proud,” said Keane.
“I’m disappointed to miss out because I don’t want to miss any game. I’m gutted but injuries happen in football and I’ll be cheering them on whatever.”
Keane should be back for what could prove to be the group decider away to the Swiss, and reports that the injury is progressing well.
He added: “The ankle is not too bad. It’s coming along a lot quicker than expected so hopefully I’ll back in the next couple of weeks.”
Keane could be replaced in attack by his White Hart Lane team-mate Gary Doherty, whilst Spurs defender Steve Carr will be in the team.
Victory will put Ireland six points clear of Russia and a point ahead of current leaders Switzerland.
Russia, who will only have two games left, then play Switzerland next Wednesday.
