Five inmates at Mountjoy prison were taken to hospital after a fire at the jail, it has been confirmed.

Five inmates at Mountjoy prison were taken to hospital after a fire at the jail, it has been confirmed.

It is believed that the prisoners are being treated for smoke inhalation after a fire started in a cell in the basement yesterday.

There were no injuries among the jail staff.

The prison service and the gardai are now investigating the incident.
