More than 90% of TUI members vote for industrial action at country's 14 Institutes of Technology

Members of the Teachers Union of Ireland have voted in favour of industrial action at Institutes of Technology around the country.

The union represents 4,000 lecturing and research staff in the colleges and says it now has a mandate for action up to and including a strike.

The ballot result has been announced this evening in the dispute centring on funding and staffing cuts, in what the union calls a "third-level crisis".

President Gerry Quinn claimed the mandate is clear, saying: "We have a 92% 'Yes' vote for industrial action up to and including strike action on a 56% turn-out.

"So that's a very strong mandate and it's a mandate for industrial action from all 14 Institutes of Technology throughout the state."
