Research has today revealed the extent to which the subjects Irish men and women talk about over their cup of tea differ.

The survey found that one in four women say they talk about their family and one in five men say they talk about their work.

Women’s top five conversation topics over a cup of tea are: family (25%), gossip (24%), work (17%), economy (16%), TV programmes (15%).

Men’s top five conversation topics over a cuppa are: work (20%), football (19%), economy (18%), GAA (15%), family (14%).

The research also revealed almost one in three men usually drink tea in work compared to just 22% of women.

More than half of women (52%) usually drink their cup of tea with friends compared to 41% of men.

"For many people tea drinking is like a ritual, from how they take it to what kind of mug or cup they like," said Liz Finlay, marketing manager, Lyons Tea.

"The research revealed that what we talk about over our cuppa, where and with whom, is part of that ritual too! It is interesting to see that although the same number of men and women drink tea their favourite things to talk about over their cuppa really are quite different."

The research was carried out by Lyons Tea for its humorous campaign ‘Lyons Puts the Talk into Tea’.
