Jamaica 0 Nigeria 2
Goals from John Utaka and Bartholomew Ogbeche saw Nigeria deservedly retain the Unity Cup after victory over Jamaica at The Valley today.
Utaka took advantage of a dreadful mistake in the Jamaican defence to put his team in front after 18 minutes and Ogbeche, who also scored twice in Saturday’s 3-0 over the Republic of Ireland, struck the second 10 minutes after half-time.
It was a pacy, feisty contest in which neither side took their foot off the accelerator, but in players like Utaka, Ogbeche and Christian Obodo, Nigeria possess extra class and it was this factor that proved decisive in front of a vociferous, enthusiastic crowd.
Jamaica take on Ireland on Wednesday in the final match of the round-robin competition.
Bolton’s Ricardo Gardner had the first chance of the match for Jamaica, a shot from the edge of the penalty area that forced keeper Sunday Rotimi into a smart save.
Rotimi then charged out of his goal in the 14th minute to prevent Jermaine Johnson from having a clear sight of the target after the right winger had beaten the offside trap to race onto a ball from Claude Davis.
But it was at the other end of the field where Jamaica were experiencing difficulty, and it was an appalling error that allowed Nigeria to take the lead.
There appeared to be little danger when the ball reached Davis on the edge of his own penalty area, but the Preston North End man lost concentration and was robbed by Utaka, who kept his nerve to steer the ball home.
Davis had an immediate chance to rectify his mistake, but he failed to connect with Fabian Davis’ left-wing corner when he had been left unmarked eight yards out in the 22nd minute.
Shortly afterwards, Ogbeche’s looping header from just inside the area in the 32nd minute almost caught keeper Donovan Ricketts napping, and 60 seconds later Ogbeche ran onto an Utaka through ball but was denied by a desperate last-ditch tackle from Ian Goodison.
Utaka fired wide on the stroke of half-time for Nigeria as Jamaica’s defence continued to look stretched.
The Reggae Boyz began the second half well, though, and it took an alert interception from Seyi Olajengbesi to prevent Richard Langley’s through ball reaching Marlon King.
King looked lively early in the second period and almost brought his side level in the 54th minute.
His hooked shot was deflected onto the post via a touch from keeper Rotimi, but when the ball was played back into the danger zone by Kevin Lisbie, Nigeria defender Yakubu Adamu was on hand to hack clear.
Jamaica were made to regret that miss as Nigeria extended their lead immediately, Ogbeche collecting Utaka’s through pass and slotting the ball past Ricketts as the Jamaica defence simply stood and watched.
Ogbeche and Utaka looked an excellent attacking partnership, and Ogbeche almost scored his second after some neat interplay with his fellow front-runner.
Johnson was perhaps Jamaica’s most threatening player, and he was unlucky in the 64th minute when he overran the ball after evading three Nigerian challenges.
Paul Obiefule, another impressive performer for Nigeria, was unfortunate not to make it three in stoppage time when his right-foot shot from 10 yards crashed off the post.
