Gardaí are tonight investigating an armed robbery at Castlecomer Post Office in Kilkenny.

Two men wearing balaclavas entered the premises at 2pm and threatened two female employees with what appeared to be a handgun.

The raiders got away with an unsubstantial amount of cash in a green Toyota Land Cruiser with a "98 G" registration.

The vehicle had been stolen in Portlaoise, Co Laois earlier this morning.

Witnesses said they saw the Land Cruiser near the post office a short time before the robbery, parked alongside a white Ford Transit van.

Gardaí tonight appealed for information to help them with their investigation.
