Rockers Franz Ferdinand got caught up in a hostage situation in an American restaurant - but they were so busy eating they didn't realise they were in danger.

Singer Alex Kapranos and bassist Bob Hardy had gone for a bite to eat just before a gig in New Orleans, Louisiana - where they were playing a leg of their US tour.

At the time, a man who lived in a flat above the restaurant was holding his landlord at gunpoint and police descended on the building.

But Kapranos says: "We didn't realise until the cop cars and loudhailers appeared.

"The waiter in the restaurant kept popping in and out to keep us posted. He assured us that there was a seven-man SWAT team with rifles on the roof. There seemed no reason to doubt him.

"We ate our lunch and enjoyed it."
