Hammond: No fear of driving

Richard Hammond today revealed he hopes to be back behind the wheel within weeks – but vowed to steer clear of jet cars.

The Top Gear star, aged 36, was speaking just five weeks after a 288mph crash that almost killed him.

He said he does not think he will fear getting back inside a car

He told the Daily Mirror: “Would I get into that situation again? Right now, yes. I don’t think it will affect me next time I get inside a car. I am not living in fear and trepidation, I’m not worried there are going to be horrible flashbacks.

“I want to get back to the world. For five weeks now we’ve been removed from the world and I miss it. It’s the hardest possible thing.”

Hammond is recovering with his wife Mindy and daughters Izzy, six and Willow, three, in a secluded mountain cottage where he has been for the past two weeks.

He is on no medication but still sees doctors regularly and has been told it will take six months for his brain to heal properly.

Hammond attributes his survival solely to a near-obsessive dedication to safety and says he will use the horrific experience to warn others to take every precaution available.

The presenter said he expects Top Gear to return to the screen in the New Year, although he jokes he will probably be confined to road-testing sofas.
