Leading northern jockey Tony Dobbin and two colleagues were lucky to escape injury when they were involved in a car crash on their way to Market Rasen on Tuesday.

Dobbin, who is based in Cumbria, was travelling with Calvin McCormack and Brian Harding when they were involved in accident about three miles away from the course.

McCormack and Harding managed to hitch a ride to the track with trainer George Moore in time for racing but Dobbin missed his one booked ride, Undeniable, who finished eleventh to Reviewer in the opening Mike Molloy Memorial Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle.

McCormack explained: ‘‘Tony was driving his BMW when a van turned across in front of us.

‘‘It was very scary but fortunately the three of us are all right, that is the main thing - things could have been much worse, though the car is not in a very good way.

‘‘Tony has had to wait for the recovery lorry but Niall Hannity has gone to pick him up and bring him back here. We will get a lift home with the valets.’’

Dobbin said later: ‘‘It frightened the life out of me I can tell you, but thank God the three of us are all right - which is more than I can say for the car I am afraid. The driver of the van was taken to hospital, but fortunately I think he was all right really.

‘‘I feel fine and I would have ridden in the first race if I had been able to get here in time, but I had to wait for the police and to get the car sorted out. I am not riding anywhere tomorrow anyway.’’
