State to compensate 91 workers in conditions row

The State is set to pay €217,000 to 91 temporary workers in the civil service for breaching an EU directive relating to their pay and conditions.

Reports this morning said a rights commissioner had ordered the compensation last week after hearing the workers had been denied a range of benefits enjoyed by full-time civil servants.

The commissioner ruled such discrimination had been illegal since July 2001, when an EU directive on the rights of fixed-term workers came into force.

She also reportedly found that several Government departments had flouted new laws preventing employers from undermining workers' rights by employing them on temporary contracts over lengthy periods of time.
