A nation of five million people was left powerless today after problems with a high voltage power line.
It happened in Georgia, which stands in the the Caucasus Mountain range on the east of the Black Sea.
Fuel and Energy Minister Nika Gilauri said in Tbilisi, the capital, that the blackout occurred at around 3pm (11am Irish time) on a major east-west power line.
He said officials were trying to find what caused the power cut and hoped to have power restored later today.
Passengers on Tbilisi underground trains reportedly were forced walk through train tunnels to leave the underground system.
Georgia’s electricity grid is notoriously shaky and the country has been plagued by frequent power cuts for years.
Most businesses and many residences have gas-powered generators for use when the electricity goes out.
