Blitzkreig gave Vince Smith the biggest success of his career with a gallant victory in the Group Three skybet.com Autumn Stakes at Salisbury.

Smith’s charge (20-1) held a nice position on the rail as soon as the stalls opened, and responded to Seb Sanders’ urgings by sweeping past long-time leader Silver Blue with two furlongs remaining.

Runner-up Dylan Thomas also finished with a flourish but Sanders always had a bit more up his sleeve and prevailed by a neck from Aidan O’Brien’s well-supported market leader.

O’Brien’s other entry Arabian Prince stayed on in good style to take third place.

“We had to cut him after his last run at Epsom as he was just dossing about” explained Smith.

“I have always thought an awful lot of him and never had any doubts about taking on the big boys.

“It has not been a great season but this is fantastic. If he does not get sold, I imagine we might take him out to Dubai for the Carnival and maybe have a go at the UAE Guineas.”
