The recession could help Ireland to come closer to meetings its Kyoto targets on greenhouse gas emissions, according to the latest data from the Environmental Protection Agency.
In its latest assessment, the agency says emissions will still increase over the coming years, but at a much slower rate than was predicted when the economy was booming.
This means Ireland will have to spend less on carbon credits than was previously forecast.
Agriculture remains the largest contributor to emissions (28%), followed by transport (22%) and energy generation (20%).
