A ban on this trade was introduced since the only case of foot-and-mouth was confirmed in Co Louth last year.

Export of pigmeats to Japan is believed to worth in excess of €45 million a year.

The move follows high level contact between the Department of Agriculture and officials in Tokyo.

The move has been welcomed by the Irish Farmers Association.
