Travellers urged to get vaccinated
Travellers were urged today to get vaccinated before going abroad after one in four people revealed they fell ill on holiday.
A new survey showed seven out of 10 holidaymakers do not get any vaccine before travelling despite 62% of them being aware of the dangers of tropical diseases.
The majority – 92% – believed they would “be fine without them” while a small number maintained vaccines were too costly or unnecessary as they never get sick.
Professor Sam McConkey, head of the Department of International Health and Tropical Medicine, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, warned anybody thinking of travelling abroad to seek travel health advice.
“Do your research and source information on possible travel risks,” said Prof McConkey.
“I have seen many people who have acquired travel-related diseases when abroad, such as Hepatitis B and Malaria.
“I would strongly recommend anyone planning on a trip abroad to an at-risk country to book a pre-travel GP consultation and be prepared.”
A total of 400 adults were quizzed for the survey, commissioned by vaccine makers Sanofi Pasteur MSD.
The firm also launched the new website www.healthytravel.ie which features information and advice on travel health and practices.
Its study found 25% of respondents have fallen ill when overseas, most commonly with a stomach bug, diarrhoea and vomiting.
Medics warned people visiting tropical destinations are also at risk of life-threatening conditions like rabies, yellow fever and typhoid.
Travel writer and broadcaster Fionn Davenport said travel can be a life-changing experience.
“There are so many destinations around the world that offer new and exciting experiences; new cultures, new food, new activities,” said Davenport.
“But there are some risks and challenges besides trying the world’s highest bungee jump or eating the world’s weirdest food.
“Travel-related illness can have serious consequences, so it is key to be prepared before you go.”
