The Minister for Health has said he is determined to ban smoking in pubs.
Micheal Martin said he believes such a prohibition will have to be eventually phased in, beginning with smoke-free zones in public houses.
Publicans lobby groups have already expressed their strong opposition to the legislation going through the Oireachtas.
However, the Minister said he would be going through with the measures and said he had been 'heartened' by the positive public reaction he had received.
