The man accused of unleashing the Kournikova computer virus will appear before a Dutch court on September 12.

The 20-year-old from Sneek, who has not been named, has been charged with intending to cause damage via a computer network.

Although the charge carries a maximum penalty of up to four years imprisonment, the Dutch authorities have chosen a court capable of handing out a maximum six month sentence.

He came forward a few days after the e-mail - which purported to be a lurid picture of the Russian tennis player - paralysed computer systems worldwide.

Although he admitted using a virus kit to create the malicious file, he claims he had no idea of the chaos it would cause.
