Education Minister Michael Woods has announced plans to hire an extra 400 second-level teachers to improve the teacher-to-pupil ratio in Irish schools.

The move follows the publication of a report urging the Government to employ 1,200 new teachers to reduce class sizes.

The report, conducted by Trinity College, recommends a teacher-to-student ratio of 1:15 for the first 150 pupils in a school and 1:18 for everything above that level.
