Colombia Three 'being used as pawns'

Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams has claimed that the three Irishmen being held in Colombia have become "pawns" in US efforts to prove an international terrorist conspiracy.

Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams has claimed that the three Irishmen being held in Colombia have become "pawns" in US efforts to prove an international terrorist conspiracy.

Defending his decision not to attend a US Congressional hearing into alleged links between the IRA and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, Mr Adams repeated his view that the hearing could prejudice the trial of the three men.

He also said that he would be willing to testify to the committee in the future.

"We have been involved in the USA for the last nine or 10 years," he said. "We have built up a huge raft of support which we have used for the benefit of this peace process and we would not jeopardise that for anyone."
