A man in custody following a recent murder Sydney is also being investigated over the disappearance of English backpacker Peter Falconio.

The Australian Associated Press said the suspect’s DNA would be compared with a DNA sample taken from the clothing of Falconio’s girlfriend. Joanne Lees from Huddersfield, and believed to be that of his attacker.

New South Wales Police Minister Michael Costa said he was discussing an ‘‘exchange of forensic material’’ between detectives in Sydney and Australia’s Northern Territory who are hunting Falconio’s suspected killer.

Police in Sydney said they were co-operating with an investigation into Falconio’s disappearance and apparent killing last July 14. But they declined to elaborate.

A Northern Territory police spokeswoman said the man being held in Sydney was ‘‘a person of interest, like hundreds of others.’’
