Former Senator Willie Farrell has told the Mahon Tribunal that he remembers being told by Tom Gilmartin in 1989 that he was being asked for money.

Mr Farrell, who was a childhood neighbour of Mr Gilmartin's in Sligo, has said he clearly remembers the property developer telling him of the comment "you make the mafia look like monks".

But he does not remember anything about the £5m amount.

Mr Farrell has said he thought the complaints related to local authority officials, because they were the ones with influence over planning.
