Rangers pair target treble

Kenny Miller and David Weir believe victory in tomorrow’s Co-operative Insurance Cup final can propel Rangers all the way to the treble.

Striker Miller and defender Weir are expected to start against arch-rivals Celtic at Hampden in a game that will decide the destiny of the season’s first major trophy.

Miller and Weir reckon the clash has more significance than that and could impact on the race for the Clydesdale Bank Premier League title and Rangers’ bid to retain the Homecoming Scottish Cup.

Miller said: “I think it is a massive game for us because whoever picks up the trophy will land a lot of momentum for the rest of the season.”

With Celtic already out of the Scottish Cup, Rangers will be expected to hold onto the trophy they won last May.

They currently trail their arch-rivals by three points in the SPL and Weir said of the title race: “Potentially, whoever wins on Sunday could gain the psychological advantage.

“Celtic are three points ahead of us in the league and in pole position and whatever way the game turns out on Sunday, they’ll still be top.

“But the winner will get the belief that they can beat the other team and that may have an effect on the season.

“The potential for us is there to win a treble. But for us to talk about that just as Manchester United talks about winning a quintuple is premature with so many games still to be played.”

Weir, who is out of contract at the season, added: “I don’t think you can rule out anything in football. Until the end of the season comes and we see where we stand, there’s not much to be said.

“I think at both Rangers and Celtic – until you know who wins the league - no-one knows what will happen.”

For Miller, tomorrow represents his first chance for some silverware since rejoining Rangers last summer.

The Scotland striker is hoping his fine record for Scotland at Hampden – seven of his 11 international goals have come there – will stand him in good stead.

“I’ve always love playing at Hampden at club or international level,” he told Rangers TV.

“It’s a fantastic arena when there’s a sell-out crowd and I have a lot of good memories there.

“I scored my first goal for Scotland there against Iceland and it’s just a great place to play football.

“You don’t need any extra motivation for a match like a cup final against your biggest rivals.

“We all know what the occasion will mean to both sets of fans.

“But, for me, there is that extra incentive of having the chance to win my first trophy since I came back to Rangers last summer.”
