Separted Siamese twin takes pram ride

One of the Siamese twins whose fused skulls were separated in a landmark operation in Singapore has recovered enough to take her first ride in a pram, a hospital spokeswoman said today.

One of the Siamese twins whose fused skulls were separated in a landmark operation in Singapore has recovered enough to take her first ride in a pram, a hospital spokeswoman said today.

Jamuna Shrestha’s father wheeled the one-year-old on a ride around her hospital ward, Singapore General Hospital spokeswoman Junaidah Hameed said.

Hameed said the ride in the pram was part of Jamuna’s therapy.

Jamuna’s sister Ganga is recovering more slowly from 96 hours of delicate surgery, performed in early April by a team of 20 doctors at Singapore General Hospital.

Ganga is ‘‘in a stable condition’’, said Hameed without elaborating when asked.

Earlier this month, the hospital said the outlook for Ganga was ‘‘uncertain’’.

‘‘Doctors anticipate that it will be a bumpy road to recovery for the twins, in particular for Ganga, whose outcome remains uncertain,’’ the hospital had said in a statement on May 10.

The girls were born in a remote mountain village in Nepal, joined at the tops of their heads and facing opposite directions.

Their brains were partially wrapped together and connected by a tangle of blood vessels, which doctors had to individually sever and reconnect.

Few similar operations in the past have succeeded.

The twins have become celebrities in Singapore, whose citizens donated hundreds of thousands of pounds to cover costs related to their care.
