Former Labour leader Dick Spring is predicting the party could become the largest in the years ahead.
Mr Spring said that Labour must learn from the mistakes of the past, but maintained there was no reason why the "Gilmore Gale" would not continue to gather strength.
"There's no reason the Labour Party can't cement its position...whether it's in coalition or in opposition," he said.
"Why not take on the Fine Gael party in the next Election and become the biggest party?"
