Maldini focused on winning

Record-equalling Paolo Maldini is focused only on leading AC Milan in tonight’s Champions League final against Liverpool and not the individual accolades coming his way.

Maldini will join Real Madrid legend Paco Gento as the only players to appear in eight European finals.

But the 38-year-old said: “The individual awards come third when you play in top tournaments. This has always been my philosophy throughout my football career.”

The veteran defender has already won four Champions League titles but he has also suffered in title games, never more than two years ago when Liverpool fought back from a 3-0 half-time deficit to win in a penalty shoot-out.

What has never changed for Maldini, even this season with the Rossoneri having been found guilty of corruption, is his love for the club.

“To be captain of a team that can play at the highest level for many years is absolutely beautiful,” he said.

Equalling Gento is important, Maldini admits.

“It gives me great pride and honour,” the former Italy international said.

Maldini has received a lot of well wishes and praise since Milan booked their place in the final because of the accomplishments and longevity he has enjoyed with the Rossoneri.

It is difficult, Maldini says, to give a full assessment of his almost two decades in the game.

“I have enjoyed a good career,” he said. “But I will have to wait until after Wednesday’s final to assess my career.”

What surprised many in Italy in the build up to the final in Athens was Maldini’s decision to extend his contract for a further campaign.

Maldini has struggled with numerous knee injuries and recently postponed surgery to guide his team onto the pitch against Liverpool.

“The fact that I will be playing for a further season means that I feel well and I can still help my team,” he said.

“I still get very excited about finals, which are not easy to get to.

“But I am almost 39 and you handle pressure and situations differently than in the past.”
