Munster coach Tony McGahan has praised Felix Jones for his recent performances in the red jersey following a two-year injury nightmare that has seen the former Leinster player start just 12 games for the Reds.
Jones, 24, missed most of last season due to a serious neck injury and was absent for the majority of the current campaign with a knee injury, but has made an immediate impact for Munster since his return to fitness in recent weeks including a standout performance in Brive last weekend.
With Rob Kearney still on the treatment table and Luke Fitzgerald’s indifferent performances at fullback during the 6 Nations; McGahan thinks Jones, despite his lack of game time, could force his way into Declan Kidney’s World Cup plans.
"His form has been nothing that we didn't expect," said McGahan.
"When we brought Felix here two years ago, we did so because we believed he could add something to our back play and develop into a high-class player.
"Injuries curtailed him but they haven't dented his ambition to be an international player, and I think he has a genuine chance.
"I don't think people appreciate the challenge it was for him to come back in and show high-class form against extremely good opposition after being out for six months this year and eight months the year before.
"He is one of the form backs, not only in the country, but I think if you were picking a weekly side out of the last three weeks of European action then he certainly would be well in the mix with that as well.”
