More than 100 prisoners attempted suicide in Irish jails and detention centres in 2002, according to reports in this morning’s newspapers.

More than 100 prisoners attempted suicide in Irish jails and detention centres in 2002, according to reports in this morning’s newspapers.

The reports said 95% of the prisoners were aged between 15 and 39 and 19 of them attempted suicide more than once.

The rate of attempted suicide was reportedly highest in the Dochas Centre, a women’s prison beside Mountjoy in Dublin.
