One hundred jobs are to be created with the redevelopment of the Currys and PC World electrical stores in Ireland, it was announced today.

The two retailers are to be brought together under one roof at a number of undisclosed locations over the next year and a half.

Parent company DSG Retail Ireland said none of its current 28 stores or hundreds of employees will be affected by the expansion.

Declan Ronayne, managing director, said the company was able to press ahead with the investment by cutting costs in other areas.

“In a very tough economic environment, we have proved our retailing mettle by trading successfully,” he said.

PC World and Currys cut prices in the Republic last year by matching the UK VAT rates.

“We’re a dynamic company and our focus is on the big picture,” Mr Ronayne said.

“That, for us, is capitalising on the opportunity to provide Irish consumers with an appealing retail environment with the best and widest range of technology and lifestyle products, underpinned by a good service ethic and very competitive prices.

“We have a busy 18 months ahead and look forward to updating customers as we implement our plans.”

DSG Retail Ireland said it would provide details of the new stores later in the year.

The company said it also has plans to re-fit the PC World store in Galway and the Currys and PC World stores in Limerick.
