A diver died today following an accident in the English Channel, British police said.

A diver died today following an accident in the English Channel, British police said.

Dover Coastguard sent rescue teams to a dive boat returning to Sovereign Harbour in Eastbourne, East Sussex, after receiving reports that a crew member was ill following a dive.

However, before a lifeboat and helicopter could reach the boat, the rescue teams were told that the diver was dead, a coastguard spokesman said.

Sussex Police said it was investigating the circumstances of the death but could not confirm the age or sex of the diver.
