Second man held as part of organised crime probe

Two men are now being questioned by gardaí in Co Kildare as part of an investigation into organised crime.

A man in his 30s was arrested in Co Wicklow this afternoon and is being held at Naas Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

The arrest follows an incident in the county on Sunday in which armed gardaí opened fire on a car carrying suspected members of a crime gang after the driver refused to stop.

A 30-year-old man was arrested at the scene, close to Ballymore Eustace on the Wicklow-Kildare border, and a gun and cash recovered from a second car.

Armed officers from the Organised Crime Unit had been tailing the two cars suspected of carrying members of a Dublin crime gang.

They pulled over one of the cars but also opened fire a number of times after the driver of the other vehicle ignored orders to stop.

The man arrested on Sunday remains in custody, also in Naas.

Gardaí said investigations are continuing.
