Radio group iRadio today unveiled plans to invest €3.9m in a new youth radio station for the North East region, called i107.
The move depends on the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland awarding the fourth and final youth music radio licence to the firm.
If successful, i107 would be based in Athlone and would be live on air from January 2008.
i107 promises to offer a range of innovative features in the area of listener interactivity and a region-wide talent search.
Dan Healy, chief executive of iRadio, said: “Some of the biggest audiences measured are in this region; however the proximity to Dublin and the overspill of its stations into this franchise poses a specific challenge to any new entrant.
“i107 combines an experienced and dedicated management team, in-depth research, and an ability to provide diversity in content and ownership to allow it to deliver a fresh, exciting and irresistible radio station to listeners in the North East.”
