Tour worry for Wiggins

Bradley Wiggins’ preparations for the Tour de France have suffered another setback, with a knee injury preventing him from training fully.

Wiggins, who had already been told he would be supporting Team Sky’s chosen lead rider Chris Froome on the tour, saw his hopes of victory in the Giro d’Italia ended by a chest infection and knee injury.

Team Sky principal Sir Dave Brailsford admitted today that Wiggins, who triumphed at the Tour de France last year to give Britain its first overall champion, was not yet back at full fitness and was struggling to train.

Brailsford told The Guardian: “With these setbacks I can confirm that Brad cannot currently train properly and we are monitoring this situation carefully.”

Wiggins has not been named in Team Sky’s squad for the Dauphine Libere race which gets under way in France on Sunday.

The Tour de France begins on June 29, running through to July 21.
