Newcastle 1 Leeds 0
Alan Shearer condemned relegation-haunted Leeds to a third consecutive defeat as the Newcastle skipper was again a thorn in the side of Eddie Gray’s strugglers.
Shearer’s fourth-minute piledriver was all that separated the sides, although it was a night when Newcastle should have piled on the misery for Leeds as several gilt-edged chances were wasted throughout the 90 minutes.
Mercifully for Newcastle, Shearer led the way, scoring the 20th goal of his career against Leeds and his 17th of another impeccable season to end a run of three league matches without a win.
