McGregor says ‘business as usual’ - but will it be Aldo he fights?

The most hyped fight of the year looks in serious doubt this morning.

Conor McGregor has moved to reassure fans on Twitter, but there is still no confirmation that his upcoming fight against Jose Aldo will go ahead as scheduled on July 11.

The UFC Featherweight Championship fight was thrown into doubt last night when reports emerged that Aldo, the current world title holder, had sustained a serious rib injury in training.

Twitter went into overdrive at the news that the heavily promoted title fight might be cancelled, and UFC boss Dana White called for fans to calm down, tweeting: “relax everyone”.

Jose Aldo's coach Andre Pederneiras confirmed this morning that the injury appeared to be a serious one.

“He wept, he wants this fight, it was a investment from all sides,” Pederneiras said to Brazilian site Combate(translated using Google).

“I was with him much of the afternoon. He is devastated, want to fight anyway.”

Aldo’s camp are awaiting the outcome of tests, but if a fracture is confirmed it is likely to be at least October before he would be able to fight.

McGregor was on Twitter this morning, and said: “Just know that it is business as usual up here at the top. See you all on July 11th”.

That may sound reassuring, but there is speculation that all it means is that if Aldo is unavailable another fighter will be chosen to face McGregor in Las Vegas.
