Julia Roberts' childhood dentist has had to hand out hundreds of tubes of toothpaste after pledging to do so if one of his patients ever won a big award.

Julia Roberts' childhood dentist has had to hand out hundreds of tubes of toothpaste after pledging to do so if one of his patients ever won a big award.

Dr Ted Aspes of Smyrna, Georgia, treated Roberts 26 years ago .

After Roberts won the Best Actress award at the Oscars, Aspes had to make good his promise.

"I had two families waiting for me in the parking lot when I got here on Monday morning," Aspes said.

By late afternoon, Aspes had given out hundreds of tubes of mint-flavoured toothpaste.

Dr Aspes says he wasn't caught by surprise as he had expected Roberts to win.

"I ordered 10,000 tubes last week," he said.

"I usually order a few hundred. My distributor called and said 'Hey, doc, are you sure there isn't a comma in the wrong place?'."
