Officials in the Dail have lashed out at a newspaper report that lists 10

politicians who receive more than £100,000 in wages and expenses per year.

An official Oireachtas statement today claims that the report is misleading and ignores the circumstances that give rise to TDs and senators claiming legitimate expenses.

The Oireachtas took the unusual measure of making a statement on a Saturday a day after the Dail closed down for a three-month summer recess to hit back at the claims in the Irish Independent, saying that the report was unfair and taken out of context.

The two-page Oireachtas statement sets out the arguments under which a politician can claim expenses and maintains that such media reports are based on the supposition that the State "should be run without spending taxpayer's money".
