The Government has announced a number of measures to help people losing their jobs as a result of the recession.

The Government has announced a number of measures to help people losing their jobs as a result of the recession.

The state agency FÁS is to provide an additional 50,000 places on training courses for the unemployed, while the number of referrals from the Department of Social and Family Affairs is also set to almost double.

Announcing the moves today, Tánaiste Mary Coughlan said the Government was committed to ensuring people who lose their jobs receive the appropriate help and training.

Statistics out yesterday show that the number of people signing on the Live Register has increased by more than 80% over the past year.
