FG blames Govt for failure to reduce road deaths

Fine Gael has blamed the Government for failing to reduce road accidents and particularly for failing to tackle the problem of drink-driving.

Fine Gael has blamed the Government for failing to reduce road accidents and particularly for failing to tackle the problem of drink-driving.

A Government-commissioned report - leaked to the media - shows that the Fianna Fail-Progressive Democrats coalition has failed to reduce drink-driving and its associated fatalities.

Fine Gael’s Denis Naughten said the reason was the Government’s failure to implement its own policies, which have targeted a 20% reduction in road deaths.

Deputy Naughten said: “We could save at least 80 lives every year that are not being saved at present because of the approach the Government has taken.”
