The association representing companies in the high-tech sector has called for the introduction of tax incentives in this year's budget to encourage people to buy home computers.
ICT Ireland said such a move would help Ireland achieve its target of becoming a truly knowledge-based economy.
It said people already had good access to PCs in their workplace and in schools, but the use of computers at home needed to be increased.
Meanwhile, the association is also calling for more funding to promote technology and engineering at all levels of education in order to address falling interest in such subjects.
Spokesperson Kathryn Raleigh said the Government had done good work promoting science in recent years and should now focus on subjects like maths.
"The ability of problem-solving needs to be addressed in terms of the way that maths is taught in schools," she said.
"Perhaps, in order to encourage more students to do honour maths, we need to bring back the bonus points for maths."
