Spain’s parliament legalised gay marriage today, defying conservatives and clergy to make the traditionally Roman Catholic country the fourth in the world to legally recognise same-sex unions.

Spain’s parliament legalised gay marriage today, defying conservatives and clergy to make the traditionally Roman Catholic country the fourth in the world to legally recognise same-sex unions.

The vote in the 350-seat Congress of Deputies was 187 in favour, 147 against and four abstentions.

The remainder of the MPs were not present for the historic vote on the bill sponsored by the ruling Socialists.
