There was a 127% increase in the number of farm deaths last year.

A report from the Health and Safety Authority reveals 25 people were killed in farming accidents in 2010, up from 11 the previous year.

In total, 47 people died while at work last year, compared to 43 in 2009.

Fatal accidents in the construction sector dropped to six from 10 in 2009. There were four fishing-related deaths, two more fatalities than in 2009.

The HSA says tackling the high accident rate in the agriculture industry is a priority and that the number of inspections will increase this year.
