Cyclist is fined after riding bike in rush-hour traffic on motorway - Twice!
A cyclist has been fined after being caught riding his bike the wrong way down a motorway in a bid to reach Heathrow Airport, police in England have said.
The man was spotted shortly before 6am today travelling along the hard shoulder of the M25 between junctions 11 and 13 near the west London airport.
Despite being escorted off the motorway by Highways England (HE) officers and given guidance on an appropriate route, he reappeared on the motorway slip road between junctions 13 and 14 a short time later.
Surrey Police was called to assist with the incident and the cyclist, a man in his 30s from Feltham, west London, was handed a £50 on the spot fine for contravening motorway regulations. He was then taken to a safe location.
The responding officer, Pc Tom Richardson, said: "As well as cycling along an extremely busy motorway during the rush-hour traffic, the cyclist would have also crossed motorway slip roads so it is extremely fortunate that there was not a more serious outcome to his trip.
"The act of cycling on the motorway hard shoulder is clearly reckless and dangerous and the man not only put his own life at risk but other road users too.
"A cyclist coming towards you on your morning commute on the M25 would be completely unexpected and could cause alarm - another example as to why motorists should remain alert and vigilant at all times."
