Jose Reina’s first-half penalty save from Kanu and bad misses by John Utaka and Sulley Muntari in the second preserved Liverpool’s unbeaten record for the season at Fratton Park.

It hardly looked worth a spot kick when referee Mike Riley adjudged Liverpool’s Alvaro Arbeloa had pulled Kanu’s shirt on the half hour but Reina made a successful dive to the right.

David James made two good saves to deny Yossi Benayoun and Peter Crouch before the break and Andriy Voronin clipped the crossbar and was inches from scoring late on.
