A paramedic says the student allegedly attacked by two Leeds United players was unable to speak after the assault.
Andrew Finn told Hull Crown Court that Sarfraz Najeib was conscious but unable to answer questions.
Mr Finn said he put the student on a spinal board because of the seriousness of his head injuries
Mr Finn was called to the scene with colleague Paul Farley just after 12.50am, and directed to Mill Hill by two men outside the Majestyk nightclub in City Square, Leeds.
He arrived first at the scene and saw the 21-year-old lying in the street.
He said: "He was lying on the left-hand side of the street, on the pavement. He was conscious but was unable to respond to any questions.
"He had a head injury and I could hear blood in his airway. He was moaning but not moving greatly."
Woodgate, 21, of Middlesbrough, Bowyer, 24, of Leeds, and Paul Clifford and Neale Caveney, both 22 and from Middlesbrough, all deny causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Mr Najeib, 21, from Rotherham, South Yorkshire.
Mr Najeib suffered a broken nose, fractured leg and a bite mark to his cheek in the attack in January last year.
The accused men also deny affray.
Mr Finn identified the taller of the two men as former Leeds United reserve team striker Tony Hackworth.
