The Marine Institute is due to open a new research facility in Co Mayo today.

The institute has spent more than €2m upgrading the aquaculture and catchment management base in Newport, which is one of Europe's most important Atlantic research facilities.

The base is used to count salmon, sea trout and eel numbers off Ireland's west coast.

The Marine Institute said these figures can then be used to assess the health of the marine system and the effects of land practices, forestry use, grazing and climate change.
