Noel King's Irish women's soccer side has advanced to the semi-finals at the World University Games in Bangkok by beating France 1-0 today.

The Irish goal was scored by captain Sonya Hughes, from Balbriggan, who is studying in the States.

The Dubliner struck a thunderous shot high over the goalkeeper into the left top corner from twenty-five yards out on eighteen minutes, and despite a sustained French attack, particularly in the second half the Irish women held on coolly for a memorable win, and a place in the semi-finals against Russia on Wednesday.
