A motorcade including 100 motorcyclists is escorting the coffin of Aidan Lynam back to Dublin, after his death yesterday in a Co Clare crash.

Mr Lynam, from Lucan, was taking part in the fundraising motorbike rally he helped to found - Rev-up4DSI for Down Syndrome Ireland - when he was fatally injured in a collision with a car just outside Kilkee, on the Kilrush to Kilkee road.

Mr Lynam was airlifted to the University Hospital in Limerick where he was later pronounced dead.

The 100 motorcycles escorting his coffin back to Dublin were all taking part in yesterday's fundraiser.

The motorcade left Limerick at 3pm today. Another 100 motorcyclists will be joining the motorcade at Portlaoise.

It is expected the group, which has a Garda escort, will be passing by the City West overpass (near Browne’s Barn) in Dublin at about 5pm, though bank holiday traffic could affect its progress.

Mr Lynam, who was 44, was married to Nikki. The couple had three young children - Robyn, Jake and Harry.

Rev-up4DSI was Mr Lynam's brainchild, and this year was the 10th anniversary of the event, which has raised over €1.6m for Down Syndrome Ireland.

Deirdre Waldron on behalf of Down Syndrome Ireland said: "All of our hearts are simply broken as we struggle to come to terms with this great loss."

Mourners have been asked to make a donation of €2 to Down Syndrome Ireland by texting DSI to 50300 or to make a larger donation at the Down Syndrome Ireland website.
