McIlroy not set for American switch
Rory McIlroy says he is “80% sure” that he will not be joining the American tour next year – in total contradiction of one newspaper report this morning.
The 20-year-old, on course to become the youngest-ever winner of the European Order of Merit, is expected to make his decision known in Dubai next month.
But he stated in Portugal today that he is “definitely leaning” towards staying as a member only in Europe for at least one more season.
That would still allow him to play majors, world championships and a few other events in the States.
“I’m happy with that,” added the world number 18, golf’s biggest new star.
“Fifteen (the minimum he would have to play as a PGA Tour member) is not hard to do, but I don’t want to be going back and forth.
“I’ve probably made my decision, but I’ve not announced anything yet.”
McIlroy was hoping to move closer to the money list crown this week, but opening rounds of 69 and 70 have left him trailing way behind Italian Francesco Molinari at the halfway point.
“I’ve just struggled on the green the last two days,” he said.
“I hit it great and gave myself so many chances, but I didn’t convert anything.
“It was another frustrating day and it’s tough because I should be way better than I am. I should be at least double figures (under par), if not more.”
