Two Iraqi women working as translators for the British army have been shot dead in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, coalition officials said today.

The two women, sisters, were driving home in a taxi in Basra late last night when gunmen stopped their vehicle and opened fire on them.

The killings come a day after the murder of two American coalition officials and their translator by attackers disguised as police in southern Iraq.

The motive for the latest attack was not immediately known, but guerillas have recently targeted Iraqis working with the US-led occupation forces.

Basra, which is patrolled by the British military, has seen a number of killings blamed on Shiite militias enforcing Islamic law.
